Afghanistan: five years after takeover, UNESCO presents new figures on girls banned from education

Five years after the takeover by the de facto authorities, Afghanistan remains the only country in the world to formally prohibit girls and women from accessing education beyond the primary level, reversing two decades of progress in expanding access to education.

During the briefing, Hoda Jaberian, UNESCO Programme Coordinator for Education in Emergencies, will present new data on the number of Afghan girls barred from secondary school, and will outline the economic, mental and physical consequences of this violation of girls and women’s fundamental human right to learn.

She will also highlight UNESCO’s action to support girls’ education in Afghanistan through community-based education, literacy and skills development programmes, and psychosocial support.
